Ohio State beat Iowa 58–54 at home to start reign 8 of the Women's College Basketball belt, the 1st for the program.

Iowa had held it since December 30, 1987, with 13 defenses over 58 days.

Ohio State held it for 27 days and 5 defenses, then lost it to Maryland on March 24, 1988.
