Wake Forest beat Duke 96–89 at home to start reign 35 of the College Basketball belt, the 1st for the program.

Duke had held it since December 28, 1953, with 6 defenses over 14 days.

Wake Forest held it for 4 days and 0 defenses, then lost it to NC State on January 15, 1954.
